Everything French, July 1-25, 2009

In Celebration of Milwaukee’s favorite street festival, Bastille Days, DeLind Fine Art has assembled a collection of French art that includes paintings, drawings and yes, antique posters. Featured are the impressionist paintings of Japanese artist Kazuki Yoshioka, who lives and paints in and around Paris and Parisian scenes by American artist Chuck Weber. Our poster table will offer a collection of antique and classic French posters. Paintings and drawings by notable Barbizon artists round out our Everything French art collection. Visit our NEW location at Watts, also open for gallery night.

Jules Cheret, French, 1836-1932

Jules Cheret was born in Paris on May 31, 1836 in to a family of artisans. Since the family had little money, Jules Cheret’s formal education ended when at the age of 13, his family could no longer afford to keep him in school. His father, a typographer, placed Cheret in a three year apprenticeship with a lithographer. Known as the Master of the Poster!

Leonetto Cappiello, Italian, 1875-1942

Although chiefly remembered for his posters (+/- 3000), which have been proclaimed as the first original breakthrough in French advertising art after Cheret, and for his paintings and murals, Cappiello began his career as a celebrated caricaturist and humorous draftsman and until 1904 -when he finally abandoned caricature for poster design- Cappiello’s specialty was the satirical portrait of celebrities, especially theatrical, and scenes of the haut monde and the demimonde.
